Every second Sunday of October Sermoneta, a medieval village 70 km far from Rome, go back five centuries, at 1571, on the occasion of the commemoration of the Battle of Lepanto. More than 150 people in period costumes interpret the return of sermonetan soldiers led by the Duke Onorato Caetani IV after the victory in the waters of Lepanto (Turkey) in 1571 against the Turkish fleet, aboard the ship Grifona: embraces the Duke in his beloved castle bride, Countess Agnesina Colonna.
The "Reenactment of the Battle of Lepanto" is also traveling shows in the streets, food stalls, folk performances within the walls of the Caetani Castle and the Palio horse. |
